Spelling Tests

*Weekly Spelling tests will be given on Friday.  Spelling words will be sent home each Monday.  There are 10-12 regular words, 2 challenge words, and 5-6 Second Grade No Excuse words.

Math Facts

*Second Grade students are expected to master basic addition and subtraction math facts. To that end, second graders will be tested each Wednesday.  They must pass through the sets sequentially testing on up to 4 sets per week.  Addition will be mastered first followed by subtraction.  When testing on the math wheel, students have 25 second to orally compute the 9 basic facts of a given set.

Sacramental Preparation

*Second grade students receive two sacraments: First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.  At Loyola Catholic School, we work diligently to prepare your child to receive these important sacraments.  It is your responsibility, however, to be in contact with your parish regarding their specific requirements. All LCS students will participate in an all day “Bread of Life” retreat in the spring in preparation for their First Holy Communion. This retreat is planned and conducted by the LCS second grade teachers and parent volunteers.

Homework

*Students receive math homework 3-4 nights per week.  Students are also expected to read 60 minutes per week outside of school time.  This reading must be recorded on the weekly “Reading Rocks!” log and returned each Monday.  Students should also be working to master Spelling words and math facts.
